Whatever I want.

Those words echoed through my mind like thunder. I closed my eyes and tried to force the voice from my memory. I tried to shove everything about him from my memory. His touch. His hunger. Those dark, fucking Unseelie eyes. But they refused to go, staining my goddamn memories like a spell that pulled me back to them, to him.

I hadn't left my house since yesterday. I'd just yanked the zipper on my jeans closed as I ran, and drove like a demon was hunting me all the way home. I locked the doors, checked the windows, and crawled into bed. That’s where I'd stayed, hiding under the covers as though thin cotton would somehow fucking save me.

But it didn’t save me, not from my own tormented memories, or the fact I couldn't stay here forever. I had to make a plan. My phone gave a beep, forcing my eyes to open. I rolled over, grabbed my cell from the nightstand, and glared at the screen. Missed call.

What the hell?

I sat up, the sheets pooling in my lap, and called my voicemail. “Mortal, this is Scott from Dark City. Call me…if you want your job back. Or not, I don’t give a shit.”

I scowled and replayed the message, just to make sure I'd heard right. "They’re fucking with me." My pulse sped as I licked my lips and called the number. This had to be a game, right?

"You got my message?" The snarl came on the other end of the line.

“Yeah. I got the message."

"Considering the damage you created, I think it's only fair you clean up your own goddamn mess. I'll expect you tonight, and, mortal…no more games."

He ended the call, just like that, leaving me staring at my bedroom wall. No more games? No more fucking games? I closed my eyes, trying to figure out what game they were playing at, but I couldn't find an answer.

They were giving me my job back, just like that?

Didn’t seem right, too like the wide jaws of a trap waiting.

Don't go.

You don't need them.

I could go back to James. If I dropped to my knees, literally, he’d give me my job back. All it’d cost me was to give him the best head he’d ever had in his life. It would be like nothing had ever changed. I'd go back to sucking his cock and hating myself, back to knowing those monsters still roamed the streets, killing whoever they wanted.

What are you doing? My own panicked words rang inside my head.

Whatever I want. Isn’t that what the Unseelie had said?

“Whatever I want.” I voiced the same words.

Hate rolled through me, the burn even deeper now, scorching my soul. I was branded now. Tormented by his words and now his fingers. I clenched my fist around the cell phone and pushed from the bed.

"Come back, huh?” I strode from the bedroom and into the bathroom. “Come back and finish what I started?" I lifted my gaze to the mirror, to my haunted reflection.
